Music visualizer - lighting effect that reacts to audio

I'd be interested in a lighting effect that reacts to system audio, acting as a music visualizer.
A possible implementation is having frequency bands be assignable to specific colors per zone. The louder the audio in the frequency band, the brighter the color will be within the assigned zone(s). Different frequency bands in the same zone can have their colors be added together.

This project should have a working PoC of that, but I am no expert on the matter and have failed when I attempted it before, so it'll be some time until I try to do it again.
