Started adjusting the code so that it runs both on Python 2.7 as well as 3.x (see commits eabce80 and f490acb). Opens on 3.x on my machine, but has not been fully tested yet.

Version 2.2 runs under python 3 (at least as far as I tested), which closes this issue.
