A Ruby/Rails application to browse the database of Nonprofit Adopt a Star (https://adoptastar.org)

Originally created in 2009 by Sjors Provoost, now running at https://nonprofit.adoptastar.org


Installation:

Install ruby on rails on your machine. 

Install MySQL on your machine. Also install development files, e.g. libmysqlclient15-dev

Download the source. 

Run:
bundle install

Create a MySQL database:

create database kepler character set utf8mb4 collate utf8mb4_general_ci;
grant all privileges on kepler.* to kepler@localhost identified by 'kepler';

Create the stars table:
rails db:mgirate

Download the stars:
wget http://whitedwarf.org/palebluedot/KIC.txt

Import the stars:
mysql kepler -u kepler -p < import-stars.sql

Get a Google Maps API key. 

Replace the variable value config.google_maps_api_key in config/application.rb for your API key

Run server:
rails server

Point your browser to:
 http://localhost:3000/
